I first saw Brian Mazone's name in a one-paragraph AP brief in Sept. 2006, reporting that his big-league debut had been rained out and that he had subsequently been sent back to the minors. The cruelty of that fate stuck with me, and over the ensuing years, I occasionally went and checked to see if he ever made it back to the majors. He never did. When I called him sometime in 2017 to feel him out on a possible story, he replied, "You want to write about me????" I very much did.
