In 2001, I broke the story that Cal Ripken Jr. had decided to retire at the end of the season, easily the biggest coup of my beat-writing career. Fourteen years later, I would return to the subject of the Iron Man with this essay marking the 20th anniversary of his record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game.
