In working on a story about the best sports theme music of all-time, pegged to the return of the "NBA on NBC" (and thus the return of John Tesh's iconic "Roundball Rock"), I wound up spending a lot of time at the piano, trying to find commonalities in the DNA of these pieces and to unravel whatever it was that made them great. Finally, it hit me: I could explain their brilliance so much better at a piano, on video, than at a laptop.
